RECYCLABILITY AND CIRCULAR ECONOMY

 

Society is demanding improvements regarding effective sustainability. Every economic player will have to transition from a Linear to a Circular Economy if they want to survive for a long time. In order to align their activity with this movement, it’s essential to work on the recyclability of packaging, so that packaging waste becomes a resource and the circle is closed.

There are many packaging features that affect their recyclability: material, shape, colour, adhesives etc. Each of these elements can interfere with the waste collection, selection and recycling stages and lower its percentage of recyclability. For this reason, everyone involved in the packaging chain must be aware of the criteria that need be taken into account to ensure that it is recycled and have mechanisms for quantifying and improving them.

WHAT IS THE RECYCLABILITY CERTIFICATE AND LABEL?

 


The Recyclability Certificate is a self-declaration by means of which packaging manufacturing companies and/or packaging companies, will be able to identify the percentage of packaging material available for quality recycling.

The Recyclability Label is the voluntary ecolabel that companies may include on packaging to show the result obtained on the Certificate. To obtain a Recyclability Certificate, an expert in the subject will exhaustively assess the packaging and an externa! review by the UNESCO Chair in Lite Cycle and Climate Change ESCI-UPF will be undertaken to ensure compliance with the criterio set out in the recyclability label procedures and the Gremi de Recuperació de Catalunya, an organisation that guarantees that the evaluations have been carried out taking into account the recovery and recycling systems currently available and applied.

METHODOLOGY AND CHARACTERISTICS ASSESSED



To determine the percentage of packaging material available for quality recycling, both the different packaging characteristics ( colour, materia Is, dimensions, etc.) and the currently available and applied technologies to achieve viable quality recycling are token into account. The criterio for such a determination take as a basis certain criterio of UNE EN 13430/ISO 18604, IS014021 standards, the UNE CEN/TR 13688 IN Report, as well as their own established requirements for guaranteeing that the resulting material allows quality recycling to be undertaken.

The methodology has been developed by Dríade Soluciones Medioambientales, with the scientific support ot UNESCO Chair in Lite Cycle and Climate Change ESCI-UPF and the experience of the Gremi de Recuperació de Catalunya. 


SGS lnternational Certification Services Ibérica, S.A.U. certifies the "CONCESSION PROCESS OF THE CERTIFICATE OF RECYCLABILITY AND AUTHORIZATION OF THE USE OF THE RECYCLABILITY LABEL".

HOW IS PACKAGING RECYCLABILITY SHOWN?


Both the Recyclability Certificate and Label will show the percentage of packaging material available for quality recycling in two ways:

CERTIFICATION STAGES

1-QUALITATIVE ASSESSMENT OF PACKAGING RECYCLABILITY
• Exhaustive analysis of possible interference caused by the design or composition of the packaging in their recycling processes: collection, sorting and recycling.

External review by the Gremi de Recuperació de Catalunya, to ensure that the assessments have been developed taking into account the recovery and recycling systems currently available and applied.

• Proposal for possible improvements as far as recyclability is concerned. The company requesting assessment of its packaging may decide to continue to the following stages or implement the proposed improvements and thus subsequently certify a larger percentage of packaging material available far quality recycling.
2-QUANTIFICATION, REVIEW AND CERTIFICATION
• Quantitative assessment and determination of the percentage of packaging material available for quality recycling.

• External review by the UNESCO Chair in Lite Cycle and Climate Change ESCI-UPF and the Gremi de Recuperació de Catalunya.

• lssue of report and Certificate of percentage of packaging material available for quality recycling.
 


3-RECYCLABILITY LABEL
• Awarding of authorization for the inclusion of the Recyclability Stamp on the packaging.
4-SPECIFIC AUDIT
• Specific audit for the award of the Certificate and Label on specific packaging.

Companies requesting the Certificate or La bel must provide ali the information relating to packaging design, materials and substances of which it is composed, as we/1 as physical samples of the packaging to be analysed.

UNESCO CHAIR IN LIFE CYCLE AND CLIMATE CHANGE ESCI-UPF




The UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change ESCI-UPF has the function of continuously reviewing and improving the Recyclability Label from a scientific point of view, without stopping the application of the current versions. It shall also act as external reviewer of the certificates issued, in accordance with the procedures for managing the certificate. 


The Chair has a special interest in the methodology of environmental communication through labels and will dedicate its efforts to the continuous development of the Recyclability Label. Apart from a multitude of projects on LCA, carbon footprints or Environmental Product Declarations for individual companies.





The Gremi de Recuperació de Catalunya collaborates in the process of obtaining the Certificate and/or Seal of Recyclability as a consultation and review body in the evaluations carried out to guarantee its suitability for the recovery and recycling systems currently in place.
